What Happens When Art Becomes a Space for Healing?

How do we reconnect with ourselves in a world that constantly asks us to keep moving? How can art become more than performance — a space to pause, release, and breathe again?

On December 7, 2025, the Quadrant International Arts Association (QIAA) presented Panel 002: Performing Arts × Therapy at FiDi Creatives in New York City. Bringing together over 60 guests — including artists, therapists, counselors, educators, students, and individuals outside the arts — the evening explored how movement, sound, theater, and creative expression can support emotional wellbeing and human connection.

Rather than a traditional seated discussion, the panel unfolded as a living, interactive experience. Throughout the evening, guests were invited not only to listen, but to participate: standing in circles, breathing together, responding to rhythm, singing across the room, and stepping into moments of improvisation and reflection. What began as a gathering of strangers transformed into a shared space of openness, curiosity, and release.

Hosted by Valkyrie Yao, the first section of the evening featured choreographer and educator Fatima Logan-Alston alongside award-winning choreographer Derick McKoy Jr. Through conversation, guided movement exercises, and rhythmic interaction, they explored how the body stores emotion and how movement can help process memory, stress, and disconnection. Guests followed drum patterns, mirrored gestures, and engaged in simple physical exercises that encouraged awareness, grounding, and play. Many stepped outside of their comfort zones for the first time this evening.

The second half of the panel expanded into theater and music-based healing practices with Fay Van Alstyne Simpson, Jakob von Eichel, and Jose Urrea. Their discussion centered on emotional expression, vulnerability, and the role performance can play in helping individuals reconnect with themselves and others. One of the evening’s most memorable moments emerged during an interactive drama exercise, where audience members were invited to embody characters, improvise responses, and explore unfamiliar perspectives through role play.

Live musical accompaniment and improvisational exchanges between panelists added another layer to the experience, blurring the line between discussion, workshop, and performance. Rather than presenting therapy and art as separate disciplines, the evening revealed how deeply interconnected they can be: both asking us to listen, respond, and remain present with ourselves and one another.

At its core, Performing Arts × Therapy was created in response to the emotional realities many artists and individuals face today — burnout, overstimulation, isolation, and the pressure to constantly produce. QIAA envisioned this panel not simply as a conversation about healing, but as a communal space where people could feel seen through embodiment, creativity, and shared experience.

As QIAA continues developing interdisciplinary programs that bridge performance, culture, education, and community wellbeing, Panel 002 marked another step toward creating spaces where artistic practice and humanity can meaningfully meet.
